What are the requirements for "Just Accepted" Manuscripts?
"Just Accepted" manuscripts are peer-reviewed, accepted manuscripts that have not yet undergone technical editing or formatting for publication. The American Chemical Society posts these "Just Accepted" manuscripts to its Web site within 3 days of acceptance as a free service to the research community to expedite the dissemination of scientific material as soon as possible after acceptance. Authors must adhere to the specific requirements listed below to ensure rapid delivery of their accepted manuscript to the Web. This page also provides a Frequently Asked Questions section. Currently, Web posting of peer-reviewed and accepted manuscripts is only available for a small number of journals involved in a one-year pilot project. These are ACS Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, Journal of Proteome Research, and Molecular Pharmaceutics. Manuscript components should be collated in the order noted in the journal's Author Guidelines. A completed and signed ACS Copyright Status Form is required. Authors should upload a PDF or TIFF version of the signed form at the time of submission through the ACS Paragon Plus Environment. The Completed and Signed Copyright Form file designation should be selected. Manuscripts lacking completed and signed copyright forms will not be published as "Just Accepted" manuscripts.

Frequently Asked Questions
"Just Accepted" manuscripts have been peer-reviewed and accepted for publication and are posted online prior to technical editing, formatting for publication and author proofing. Authors may opt-in to have their manuscripts published as "Just Accepted" manuscript within 3 days of acceptance.
"Just Accepted" manuscripts appear in full as PDF documents accompanied by an HTML abstract. They are accessible to all readers and citable by the Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
The manuscripts posted on the Web site as "Just Accepted" are not the final scientific version of record; the ASAP (As Soon As Publishable) Article (which has been technically edited and formatted) represents the final scientific article of record. The "Just Accepted" manuscript is removed from the Web site upon publication of the ASAP Article, and the ASAP Article has the same DOI as the "Just Accepted" manuscript. The DOI remains constant to ensure that citations to "Just Accepted" manuscripts link to the final scientific article of record when it becomes available.
The American Chemical Society is posting just accepted, unredacted manuscripts as a service to the research community in order to expedite the dissemination of scientific information as soon as possible after acceptance. Dissemination of these accepted, unredacted manuscripts provides earlier access to up-to-date research in a fully citable format.
No. During the manuscript submission process, Authors can opt to have their manuscript posted as a "Just Accepted" manuscript on the ACS Publications Web site. Once the manuscript has been accepted and enters the production process (technical editing, formatting, etc.), it can no longer be designated as a "Just Accepted" manuscript nor have its status as "Just Accepted" manuscript rescinded.
No. However, to ensure a consistent Web presentation and rapid Web publication for "Just Accepted" manuscripts, we request that the final manuscript components be collated in the order noted in the journal's Author Guidelines. Supplementary Information and other files such as Web Enhanced Objects (WEOs, such as videos) should be saved and uploaded in separate files. The main manuscript text, references, figures, figure legends and tables will be posted online. Other associated files (TOC Graphic, Supporting Information, Web Enhanced Objects, etc.) will be published when the article is published as an ASAP Article and/or in an issue.
After it has been published as a "Just Accepted" manuscript, the normal production process continues. The manuscript is read and edited by a technical editor, converted to full XML and formatted for print and Web delivery. Manuscript Galley Proofs are sent to the Corresponding Author for approval. After correction of any errors, the article is published online as an ASAP Article and/or in an issue. The ASAP Article replaces the "Just Accepted" manuscript and becomes the final scientific article of record.
A copy of the manuscript will enter the normal journal production process and not post as a "Just Accepted" manuscript. The manuscript is read and edited by a technical editor and converted to full XML and formatted for print and Web delivery. Manuscript Galley Proofs are sent to the Corresponding Author for approval. After correction of any errors, the article is published online as an ASAP Article and/or in an issue.
Yes. All "Just Accepted" manuscripts will eventually appear as ASAP Articles and/or in a journal issue. Some "Just Accepted" manuscripts will not be posted as ASAP Articles and instead go straight to issue. The timing of receipt of author-corrected proofs determines whether an article is posted as an ASAP Article or if it goes straight to issue. Not all articles that eventually appear as ASAP Articles or in a journal issue may have been posted as "Just Accepted" manuscripts because some Authors may have chosen not to post their manuscripts as "Just Accepted".
No, the "Just Accepted" manuscript is not the final scientific article of record. The ASAP article is the final scientific article of record. The "Just Accepted" manuscript is removed from the Web site upon publication of the ASAP Article. The ASAP Article has the same DOI as the "Just Accepted" manuscript. The DOI remains constant to ensure that citations to "Just Accepted" manuscripts link to the final scientific article of record when it becomes available.
The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) provides a means of persistently identifying a piece of intellectual property on a digital network and associating it with related current data in a structured extensible way. More details about DOIs are available here.
Yes, all "Just Accepted" manuscripts will have a Web posting date. This date is the official publication date.
No. We cannot revise the "Just Accepted" manuscript once it is posted to the Web. However, errors may be corrected by the Author while reviewing the Manuscript Galley Proofs before the article is published to the Web as an ASAP Article or as part of a journal issue. ACS cannot be held responsible for errors or consequences arising from the use of information contained in "Just Accepted" manuscripts.
Yes, a "Just Accepted" manuscript can be cited by using the DOI. "Just Accepted" manuscripts should not be considered the final scientific article of record. Technical editing and/or Manuscript Galley Proof corrections may introduce changes to the manuscript text and/or graphics that could affect content.
A "Just Accepted" manuscript can be cited by means of its DOI. A "Just Accepted" manuscript should be cited in the reference format of the journal with [Just Accepted], DOI:10.1021/#########. Published online: month abbreviation, day, year in place of the volume and page numbers. For Example:
Author 1, Author 2, etc., Manuscript Title, Journal Name/Abbreviation [Just Accepted], DOI: 10.1021/#########. Published online: Month abbreviation, day, year.
OR
Author 1, Author 2, etc., Manuscript Title, Journal Name/Abbreviation [Just Accepted], DOI:10.1021/#########. Published online: Month abbreviation, day, year.
Yes, a completed and signed ACS Copyright Status Form is required as it is for all accepted manuscripts regardless of whether they will be posted as "Just Accepted". Authors should upload a PDF or TIFF version of the signed form at the time of manuscript submission through ACS Paragon Plus. The Completed and Signed Copyright Form file designation should be selected in ACS Paragon Plus. Manuscripts lacking completed and signed copyright forms will not be published as "Just Accepted" manuscripts.
No. Publishing a manuscript as "Just Accepted" is not a means by which to comply with the NIH Public Access Mandate. The ACS offers three options for authors to comply with this mandate (see http://pubs.acs.org/page/policy/nih/index.html).
